Don't Waste Your Summer: The Power of Living Intentionally

Every year it happens. We count down the days until summer arrives. We dream about sleeping in, slowing down, taking trips, tackling projects, spending time with family, and finally doing all the things we've been putting off.

Then suddenly it's August. The pool towels are faded. The back-to-school ads are everywhere, and we're left wondering where the heck summer even went.

The truth is, most summers aren't ruined by doing too little. They're lost because we drift through them without intention.

Now, let me be clear. Intentional living doesn't mean filling every day with activities, color-coded schedules, or big, ambitious goals. In fact, I think one of the greatest gifts of summer is the opportunity to slow down. But let's remember slowing down and just "drifting" are not the same thing.

When we drift, the days disappear. We spend hours scrolling, procrastinating projects that matter to us, and saying, "We'll get to it later." When we live intentionally, we decide ahead of time what matters most. For me, I definitely have things I want to accomplish this summer, but rather than focusing on just my "to-do list", I'm carving out time to simply enjoy life as well.

This may look like:

Spending 20 minutes a day researching a new topic of interest or practicing a talent or skill you want to perfect.

Making a list the night before of the 5 MOST IMPORTANT things you want to accomplish the following day. If simply going to the bank, or tidying your bathroom are on that list, that's great!

When I make my daily goal list, I'm going to try to avoid adding overwhelming tasks. For instance, rather than needing to accomplish weeding my entire yard (that's a job!), I may simply accomplish weeding one bed or just 15 minutes of weeding, and then stop to do something fun with my kids. (Or maybe my kids and I turn it into a fun game or competition- who can pull the MOST weeds?) There's a good trick for ya, mamas.

An overwhelmed or confused mind tends to do nothing. Something is always better than nothing.

The specifics look different for everyone. What matters is choosing them on purpose and with purpose. One question I've started asking myself is this:

If August arrived tomorrow, what would I regret not making time for?

The answers usually aren't complicated. I wouldn't regret missing a few hours of social media. I wouldn't regret saying no to unnecessary obligations. I wouldn't regret leaving a few small chores unfinished. But I would regret not making memories with the people I love, and allowing myself and my children to waste away, staring at a screen.

I'd also regret not taking care of my health or investing in dreams and goals that matter to me.

The beautiful thing about intentional living is that it doesn't require perfection. You don't need a flawless summer plan. You don't need an expensive vacation. You don't need to cram all the extra things into your schedule. You simply need to pay attention. Pay attention to what fills your cup. Pay attention to the people around you and the opportunities this season offers. Pay attention to what God may be nudging you toward. Summer is going to pass whether we're intentional or not. Let's make the choice to look back and love how we spent it.

So here's your gentle reminder:

Make the phone call, take the day trip, start that project, read a book, go outside, rest, laugh, create memories, and most importantly, BE PRESENT. Brainstorm and make your list. What matters to you the most this summer? What do you want to be intentional about? Remember, it's not about being busy. Busyness creates stress and exhaustion, while intention focuses on meaningful outcomes. Intention aligns with your values and goals and leads to a sense of fulfillment. That sounds so much better than a "busy" schedule. Practice noticing the difference this summer.

The days are already passing. Let's make them count.
